The Best Part, Better

Ask the Colonel what the best part of his secret recipe is, and he'll say the skin.  The best part of peking duck is the crispy skin.  The best temaki is made with salmon skin.  Hannibal found human skin to be useful for more than masks and lampshades--but variations on Filipino favorites as well.  It should be no surprise that skin is also the best part of the pig; especially when rendered, fried, and puffed.

What makes pork skin better than all other skins, is that it can be bought without any pesky meat.  There's no skipping the butchering foreplay with chicken--and good luck with the salmon outside of Alaska.  Don't even bother trying with the sapien stuff.  Only pork skins can be bought directly, and every culture gives them a unique special treatment.

Ending On A High Note

After the latest night of the week, I wake up the earliest- good hour before my alarm.  I'm alert, ready to go and conquer the final day of my trial.  Today is the fifth and final day of survival.

Noonish rolls around and it's time to eat.  Out of turkey- almost anything I eat is going to have to be prepared.  I saute the rest of the chicken bought to make soup, make a warm peanut butter and honey sandwich, and have the final spoonful of hummus.  Not the most grand meal, but it gets me by on a cold winter day.

I already know what's on the menu tonight.  The most soul-satisfying, fatty, delicious dish of the week- chorizo fried [brown] rice.  There isn't much that's healthier than brown rice either, so i'll be feeling really good after the meal as well.

The Step Before Things Get Better

Tom, I'm never listening to you again.  I'm really hungry, and making a dish out of milk and tuna- disaster.  Were you out of your mind suggesting that?  That's a terrible idea, never again.  This isn't the week for failed experiments.

Thankfully, Foodbuzz has my back.  I got my sample tasting shipment of granola bars, which will provide much needed [free] nourishment.  The new Quaker True Delight series, having flavors like dark chocolate raspberry almond, honey roasted cashew mixed berry, and toasted coconut banana macadamia nut, is here to save me.  Sure they're good, but is it because hunger is the best seasoning?  Or maybe there was an abnormal amount of mercury in the tuna.  I need more food to get a grip on reality.

Sure there's leftover soup, and still some linguine, the king of noodles, and meatballs.  I need to tap into another food group.  Going to have to make another batch of hummus.

Survival of the Cheapest

Since I'm finally able to [financially] recover from the holidays, it's no surprise that some other terrors had to occur: a gas bill more than seven times higher than the usual- a minor car accident- a beautiful woman- the list goes on.  Problem is food costs cash as well.

It's time to cut back, but that doesn't mean I'm going to rob myself nutritionally, or of any flavor.  And let's not forget, I need roughly 3500 calories a day to function properly, and maintain my lifestyle.  I made a bet with my friend that I could survive 5 days, or 10 meals, on $30.  This should be fun.

Asian Noodle Dish of Epic Success

One of the greatest rewards I receive from the site are reader e-mails, well the non-hate ones.  This one is about a recipe that I loved to make during college because it's delicious and extremely budget friendly.  How else can someone consume over 100g of protein for less than five dollars?  Here we visit peanut noodles.
